Pavel Schelin gave a great interview 12.10.23 regarding EU, neoliberalism, wars in Ukraine and Israel, a neoliberal military-industrial complex and more. Decided to post the best points below since they look like uncomfortable truths no one is ready to face, even if I don’t agree with everything. [Pavel Schelin works in Arestovich’s online-school «Апейрон» and presents himself as a political philosopher. Wanted to find out what he studied but didn’t succeed.]

During the last 70 years the Western global order was based on the hypocritical idea of the end of history, especially the end of wars. Everybody, including FSU in Afghanistan, prepares army forces for special ops in the conditions of technological superiority. It leads to the degradation of armies, as was demonstrated by the “second in the world” Russian army on 24.02.22 and by IDF on 7.10.23 (I am unsure re IDF, but report Schelin’s words.) Schelin sees as extremely dangerous the development of weapons, like drones, which destroys the superiority of nation states vs. non-state actors.

This attempt to stop history created numerous conflicts which cannot be resolved via peaceful means. For instance, Palestinian / Israeli conflict is a case in which peaceful coexistence is impossible; one of the two must stop being a subject (быть субъектом). There is no place on the map for two states, and for Israel leaving territories is suicidal (военное самоубийство).

Israel for the Arab world is what the Gaza Strip is for Israel since it’s an alien body located in the middle of trade routes and logistics chains.

Why are civilians suffering the most? The philosophical paradox of war is that, to put any restrictions on warfare methods, one must give it a legitimately recognized space in foreign relations. Otherwise, war expends indefinitely; even domestic policy turns into a civil war. See: Ukrainian cultural front, economic front, песенный фронт.

A neoliberal military-industrial complex is unready for big / mass wars. If we have no wars but only special ops, for the last 30 years the complex has been working to produce a small number of technologically advanced and costly weaponry. It lets the system to engage in money laundering. Thus, financially, it’s more profitable to produce one expensive plane than 10 simpler ones.

The current military-industrial complex is unable to produce sufficient weaponry for two large wars: in Ukraine and in the Middle East.

2022 was disastrous for several countries I feel connected to and not altogether good for my own country.

Lets hope 2023 will bring a few welcoming changes and start healing what was broken in 2022. If it's too much to wish for, at least let 2023 not be as depressing as it appears in forecasts.

Today thought that one positive element of British monarchy is to fulfill the desire of quite many people to adore (“be a fan of”) somebody representing an authoritative parent figure.

The roots of Putin club, Trump lovers or even of the nickname “Mutti Merkel” are psychological. If people direct those needs at the queen, it’s much healthier than directing them at manipulative and often mistaken politicians. At least, the queen was supposed to be outside of politics and followed those rules, unlike quite a few even in her own family.

Что думают россияне о войне?

Живу не в бывшем СССР (уехала еще ребенком), и когда читаю посты разных сторон о войне, возникает когнитивный диссонанс.

Многие граждане России пишут "мы побеждаем" или "нельзя отступать", или "В любом конфликте – особенно вооружённом, особенно между государствами – вообще не имеет значения, кто тут прав. ... Имеет значение только одно – есть ли для тебя здесь свои и чужие" (и это умный, мыслящий человек, читала его дневник долгое время) , в то время как глобальный Запад видит ситуацию совсем иначе (слова из 4го пункта выделены мной, стоит прочитать весь текст по ссылке) —

Россиян не пугает такая ситуация? Подсознательный страх настолько силен, что люди предпочитают не задумываться, а выкрикивать воинственные лозунги как-будто исполняя магический ритуал или принимая сильнодействующие наркотики? Даже мне грустно видеть такое, а я никогда не была россиянкой.

Люди не хотят понимать, что "мы побеждаем" или "нельзя отступать" = контрольный выстрел в голову страны? Не жаль? Мне правда жаль Россию тоже. (Верю 100%, что в Украине все будет хорошо в ближайшие 5 лет, максимум.) Русский мой родной язык детства, отец был русским по национальности.

Что если выбрать сторону России требует оттащить ее от края пропасти? Не дать продолжать нестись навстречу паровозу? Что это за проклятая слепота, подталкивающая к распаду, к гибели страны?

What we call “the West” is not a spiritual entity, but an administrative system first and last. Is is not an ethno-geographical ensemble, but a legal and institutional system: it includes Japan, S. Korea, and Taiwan. It mixes the thalassocratic Phoenician world of network-based trade and that of Adam Smith, based on individual rights and freedom to transact, under the constraint of social progress. In the United States, the difference between Democrats and Republicans is minor when seen from a different century. Both sides wants social progress, but at different rates of growth.

On the other hand, nationalism requires the All-Mighty Centralized –worse, Hegelian — State, and one that curates cultural life to weed out individual variations.
