Written for Cat's Birthday HP Drabblethon 5  at mctabby's lj.

Recipient: anitaray
Prompt: Arabella Figg and Petunia Dursley seek each other out after the events of DH.

Word count: 370

Rating: PG or G (unsure)

Trust Potter with the entire Auror force at his beck and call to ask her of all people to deliver it. He thrust the letter in her hand and disappeared in Diagon Alley before she could say a word. She'll leave it on the doorstep on the way to buy milk for Mrs Tibbles's kittens in the evening. If the message gets blown away by wind, it surely won't be Arabella Figg's fault and may be the Head Auror will learn for future use to get people's agreement before assuming they'll do him a favor.

~ ~ ~

I want to forget you
I feel completely defeated
I want to forget you
Like you never existed
Yet you still haunt me out of the blue

Petunia shuddered and quickly turned off the radio, yet the stupid love song's lyrics continued to haunt her during the day.

But I want to forget you
Start my life anew

But I want to forget you
For that moment is now due

Unfortunately, the memories she would most like to forget were the toughest to leave behind. In her dreams she continued to be stalked by talking letters, to helplessly stand near
Dudley as he was chocking after eating only one minuscule candy cane, to hide in one of those freaks' houses, afraid to move, lest she accidentally touched something magical. Once she awakened to the wailing of the neighbors' newborn infant and felt more frightened than she'd ever been in 2 years since they returned home.

Perhaps Diddy was right and she should try this new AAT thing. Of course, she won't go to a therapist – she would hate to have neighbors talking about her breaking down after the no-good nephew disappeared somewhere, probably getting life sentence for murder. Besides, the only thing therapists were good at was parting between fools and their money & Petunia didn't consider herself a fool. She probably should check Ms Figg's kittens in the evening. Street cats always seemed dislikable, sneaky, wild creatures. She could easily understand why they were believed to be witches' familiars. However, lazy, longhaired cats were another matter altogether. Their entire look seemed to broadcast: "I'm domestic and respectable and as normal as you're". Yes, she will definitely look at them.

A wonderful, creepy drabble, which archon_mentha has written for me:

Prompt: A conversation between Voldemort and Albus Severus. (V doesn't know (at first) who the boy is).

But first THE fic recommendation! One of the few fics I started and couldn't put aside until reaching the end:

"The Golden Age" by Arsinoe de Blassenville:
"Post DH. In the wake of victory, Harry struggles with life, love, and the reform of the British wizarding world. He learns that life is complex, and that happy endings are fleeting."

A very beautiful book version can be downloaded (or read online) from Red Hen Publications (the last of the fics there).

Seeing both of them at the parlor's door, Narcissa stopped smiling and quickly rose from the table. The guest rose too. He was a thin, tall old man with a very arrogant face.

Lucius was lost. If he really was a lover, it had to be acknowledged that Narcissa had quite peculiar taste in men.

Anyway, the guests had to be introduced.

"Sev! Quick, think of something! I've already told him that I'm a widow!"

 "Did you write that explicitly?"

"Sure.  Wrote that I'm a widow, my husband perished, and my son and I practically starve… And suddenly such unpleasantness! Who knew he'd be freed on New Year Eve?"

"Hmm…  Nobody knew, of course," the Professor answered meditatively. "Does Draco know about it? Is he ready to represent a poor orphan?"

Poetry:

More than a year ago I found 2 wonderful Harry Potter poems about
Harry and Draco by an unknown author. After googling I found they (and many others) were written by Judy Nathanson, a retired theater arts teacher, who has written poetry all her life. On her site you can find both HP and not HP poems.

My favorites among HP poems are still the first 2 poems, which I found long ago. As for not HP poetry, I haven’t decided yet. A few examples are:

If We Took The Time

Where Are The Children? (about her former students)

Secret Dreams of The Heart

Guardian Angel

Summery Executions 9:

What can evil stem from, if not from cruelty? How does Molly decide to congratulate her son for being promoted to a high rank in the Auror business? What are the dangers of a wild snowball fight down on the grounds of Hogwarts and why is Narcissa furious at Bellatrix? Read to find out.

Note: My criterion for choosing summaries is their being funny, not the fic's badness. If I am highly amused by a summary, I think probably other people will enjoy reading it too for one reason or another. Since a summary is supposed to make people want to read a fic, its' being funny is a plus (if it’s intentionally funny, of course). Sometimes there can be summaries of wonderful fics. I read only a very small part of those fics, but if I read a fic and like it, I will give a link (this post has 3). I will never link to a fic I didn’t like, since that would be a sort of flaming.

A Time to Gather Stones Together.
Author: Ferry.
The original fic in Russian: here.

Harry was standing on platform nine and three-quarters, waiting for the arrival of Hogwarts Express. The smell of Christmas was in the air.  If he were asked what the smell was, he most likely wouldn't be able to answer, but Christmas definitely had that smell for him nevertheless.

- "Oh, Harry", chirruped Ginny, tucking her hands in sleeves, "I am so worried… You know, I have never thought about it before, but is it possible mother was just as worried, when I was coming home after my first term?"

"She certainly didn't chatter less", thought Harry and immediately felt ashamed. He loved his mother-in-law. And his wife, on the whole, too, even though during the 12 years since their wedding flaming passion turned into calm affection… and habit.

Harry glanced at the straight, fair-haired figure with a cane, standing a couple of meters away from them. Of all things, what an irony.

"Have you noticed Malfoys too?", asked Ginny, "I didn't even know they had a child in the same year as Katty".

"Yes", responded Harry, feeling his wife's demanding stare, "Strange that I didn't see them, when we saw Kathleen off".

"Oi, what was strange in that, Harry! As if we saw somebody except our girl!"

"Right you are"

A whistle of the approaching train was heard. Surrounded by a cloud of steam, the train majestically moved along the platform, and the waiting hurried to come closer to the tracks. Only Malfoy continued to stand tranquilly. For some reason, Harry didn't want to scurry either, but Ginny seized his hand and pulled to the train.

Before they could make even a couple of steps, doors of the closest car opened, and Kathleen Potter went out on the jump, pulling by hand a thin, blond boy with so pointed and capricious face that there could be no doubt whose son he was.

                                                      (via)

"Katty, dear, what happened?", gasped Ginny, rushing to the daughter.

Only then Harry noticed Kathleen's disheveled hair and wet eyelashes and the black eye of Malfoy's offspring.

"If this scoundrel hurt my daughter…"

The current UK election campaign reminded me of this wonderfully funny fic, inspired by… UK election

Swinging the Vote by Wormykins (Chapters: 1)

Rating: PG - Spoilers: PoA - 882 hits - 1084 words
Genre: Wizarding Society, General - Main character(s): NarM, RL, SB - Ships: None - Era: 1970-1981 (Including Marauders at Hogwarts)
It's election time again, and Remus Lupin has a reputation for being a tough voter to win over. Why is this, and will anyone ever succeed? Inspired by UK election canvassing, of all things.

Summery Executions 7 : Do you know what is wrong with the saying that Narcissa persuaded Lucius not to send Draco to Durmstrang? What is the real moral of Tom Riddle's back-story and how will Dobby save Harry from V's clutches? And, most importantly, why Harry & Ginny had to be together?  Our writers will tell you everything!

"It seems to be common knowledge that I persuaded Lucius not to send Draco to Durmstrang. Actually, that's not quite true - Draco was always going to attend Hogwarts. All I did was to remind Lucius of that." Let Narcissa tell you how.

They were outnumbered, they were outclassed, and they were led by Harry Potter.

The third sentence is merely a coincidence, of course. (This quote is my favorite with the first one.)

"You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your relatives," goes the saying. How unfortunately true. An OotP-compliant look at the Black family, affectionately nicknamed as "why canon extrapolation is so much fun."

Harry sees a chance to be a hero, but Lord Voldemort sees the chance to regain everything he lost during the war.

Guess who dies in the end of the fic…

The title: EVERYTHING’S FINE, BEAUTIFUL MARCHESA…
Author: Fidelia .
Beta: who is that at all? ;)))
Rating: PG-13
Main characters: Lucius Malfoy, Draco Malfoy.
Genre: humor, suspense.
My comment: This minific must be read until the end to be understood.

The poem for this fic (in Russian): here

EVERYTHING’S FINE, BEAUTIFUL MARCHESA…

The morning sun was bathing the elegant parlor, featuring emerald- silvery tones, birds were jollily singing in the garden, rejoicing in the beginning of a new summer day. Being in a wonderful mood, Lucius Malfoy was savoring the morning cup of tea, his eyes narrowed in pleasure, when in the open window flew Draco's eagle owl and offered a leg with a letter. The senior Malfoy unhurriedly untied the pigtailed parchment and opened it. In a heartbeat his face fell and turned chalk -white, his eyes became wide open, and hands started trembling so much that black coffee was spilled on the snow-white starched tablecloth, creating ugly stains. It seemed Lucius had a fit of apoplexy. Here is what he read:

-Nev, and what do you think?

The head was already buzzing from the drink and a great fiat of will was needed to retrace the topic of the conversation and understand what he was asked about at all.

-  McGonagall, of course!

- No, Ron, as a teacher Professor Flitwick is significantly…

- In my opinion, better than Professor Lupin…

-  Whatever you say, but Divination…
- Nev, and what do you think? Who
was the best teacher in our generation?

He blinked a few times to focus his stare on the flushed Finnigan's face, shrugged his shoulders and gave out:

- Professor Snape.

And immediately the buzzing in the ears intensified:

- Ough… For crying out loud!

- This greasy rascal?!

- No, Nev, out of all people-you?!

After meeting with a squall, he took his coffee cup, put it on the plate upside down and accurately placed it in the middle of the table. Hermione caught the falling bottle.

- Here. Can you transfigure it into a hedgehog?

- "Urr…", Ron, returning to the old habit, thrust a hand into his red hair, which greatly thinned out on the top during the last years, "well, we have already drunk so much…"

- Fine. And charm it to sing "The fire burn, the cauldron boil"?

Hermione took out a wand, but paused, frowning:

- I am not sure about the second syllable… We need to check in "Basic charms"…

 - "Well," Neville turned the cup back and put it in front of Lavender. Harry with grace of a professional seeker caught a cup with stickjaws.

- What will I do tomorrow morning?

Lavender squinted and concentrated on Neville's cup.

- "Having that morning-after feeling," murmured Harry.

Everybody laughed. Hermione skeptically looked at Harry.

- "And who remembers the recipe of the anti-hungover Potion?" he asked carelessly, taking back his cup from Lavender.

- "What is to remember! Only seven ingredients!" gave a snort of contempt Ron.

- "And there is no need to take into account the lunar phase," cheerfully added Parvati, "Only to steer anticlockwise…" she concluded considerably quieter.

At the table in "Jolly Griffin" the silence deepened. Ron broke down first.

- No, I don't understand how did the nosed monster succeed to hammer this into us?!

- "I don't understand something else," pensively said Hermione. "Why Neville alone could notice that?"

- "Why… Let's say, I had the opportunity to look at the situation from another side," answered the Herbology Professor of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry Neville Longbottom.

1. The Human Condition by CK Talons

     My rating: 5∕5↔☺☺☺☺☺

I stumbled upon this fic here
.
The author's plot summery:

Life was never easy for him. Now, Harry is confronted with the only evil he has ever feared; an enemy he cannot see. For the leader of the treacherous Black Order is as elusive as it is powerful. Residing in secret, withholding power beyond anyone has ever known, and capable of penetrating what we thought once as safe, the leader has but one obstacle in the way. But before Harry Potter can confront and rid our world of treachery once more, he must first battle the weakness of his own mind...

If this summery seems like a very old cliché: Harry versus The new Evil, you are mistaken! Cliché is the last word to describe this fic.

If I had to describe it just in one sentence, it would be: Show me Ithaca.

From Wikipedia: Ithaca the island symbol of adventure and longing for homeland but also the symbol of the path to education and self-knowledge.
From the fic: "Ithaca was written about in Greek myth as one of the most beautiful places in the world. It appeared in Homer's Odyssey as the home and kingdom of Odysseus. It was believed to be located south of Greece on its own island. But as far as we know, Ithaca isn't real; it's just a myth."

Living in the mythical Ithaca isn't possible, or is it? Which cost would you be ready to pay to have the thing you want most in your life? How would you define good and evil? Can one mourn for the evil enemy, yet understand that his killing was unavoidable? What is Harry's private Ithaca? Will he ever achieve it & with which cost?

This fic is way better than one can think from my summery. It attracted me for several reasons. First, it has a psychological deepness and a villain able to lure Harry into the darkness in such a way that his death is mourned, while Harry (& everybody else) stays IC. All characters are fleshed out like real, intriguing people, including ones invented by the author, each with a distinctive, unique personality. You won't meet plot robots or shallow caricatures (like 6 book's romances, imo) here. In fact, after reading this fic I fell in love with Vanessa more than with Hermione after 6 books despite her flaws. (And being sympathetic with a character, let alone relatively minor one, is rare for me.)

The fic is long, but it's worth it. There are 2 unexpected yet logically believable twists, which add even more suspense & make this fic original. Imo, only after reading the whole fic one is able to give it full justice.

The added bonus is that the descriptions of places and people are vivid, colorful & originally impressive. In short, if you search for a tale, which would make you a tingle with suspense, surprised, not delving into clichés – this is a fic for you! Btw, if somebody reads it, I would be very happy to hear your impressions about it & whether it's really as good as seems to me now. Which new & old character did you like most and why? Were you caught unaware by the twists?

2. Title: Voldemort in the Loony Bin

    My rating: 3∕5 ☺☺☺☻☻
    Author: mahaliem

Summary: Pretty much what you'd expect from the title.
Rating: PG-13

    Wordcount: About 2,000
Notes: There are stories in fandom where the hero wakes up in a mental hospital. Everyone tries to convince the hero that his world is all in his head. Buffy the Vampire Slayer had a wonderful episode based on this concept and I've read a terrific fanfic in the HP fandom with the same idea. This is my version of that cliché.

I have been lurking at this site  for a long time & finally decided to make a list of the best fics I have met after ≈2 years of enjoying hp fanfiction both at this site & others. To make choice easier I will sort them by genre, each fic will have a summary & the rating. [The summaries aren't my & were mainly taken from The Nifflers Recommend section.] This list will be (hopefully) regularly updated. Enjoy!

P.S. I will be grateful to hear your opinion about the fics. Each of them has made a lasting impression on me, thus other people's opinions are particularly interesting.
