The end of an era

 The last leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail  Gorbachev, and Queen Elizabeth the 2nd with their spouses.  

Today thought that one positive element of British monarchy is to fulfill the desire of quite many people to adore (“be a fan of”) somebody representing an authoritative parent figure. 

The roots of Putin club, Trump lovers or even of the nickname “Mutti Merkel” are psychological. If people direct those needs at the queen, it’s much healthier than directing them at manipulative and often mistaken politicians. At least, the queen was supposed to be outside of politics and followed those rules, unlike quite a few even in her own family.

Это был такой уютный мир, в котором Королева из детских сказок действительно существовала в реальности, объединив мир сказочный с миром обыденным, и тем самым провозглашая самим фактом своего существования реальность сказки, Санта Клауса, безумного шляпника и маленькой Алисы

И от этого становилось теплее

That's a really interesting idea, that the monarchy lets people be fannish about an authority figure who doesn't actually exercise power instead of the authority figures who do. I wonder if there's research about that?

Don't know about the research but saw similar ideas widely expressed in Russian-speaking lj.
